There is a historical and technological arc that will accompany this  - a correlation with human evolution and industrial revolution *

1.  Drawing, the most basic of mark making methods – 
     stick in dirt, charcoal on paper etc.

2. Engraving on wood or metal –

·      This of course means that some sort of printing methodology      is developed. 
    Presses, ink, rollers, daubers, paper etc.

·      Lever pulled

·      Ink, print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

3. Movable type, enables complex narratives, coupled with             engraving

·      Means of production becomes streamlined

·      Crank is turned

·      Ink, print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

4. Lithography (Stone, & Zinc)  

·      Drawings or engraving on stone coupled with  

·      methods 1,2 & 3

·      Allows for more complex imagery, introduction of multiple         color

·      Introduction of photography

·      Gears engaged

·      Compose, ink, print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

5. Offset Lithography  (Aluminum)

·      Technology advances to such a point where composition or 
    paste up is done by hand or on computer

·      Copied or shot onto film

·      Exposed onto plate

·      Fixed onto press.

·      Button is pushed

·      Ink, print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

6. Offset lithography (Aluminum, Plastic or Paper plates)

·      technology advances yet again. Means of production has sped       up.

·      Images, type, composition, are created on computers

·      Files generated

·      Plates exposed

·      Fixed on presses

·      Ink, print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

7. Digital printing

·      technology advances yet again. Means of production has sped       up.

·      Images, type, composition, are created on computers

·      Files generated

·      Print button pushed

·      print, distribute

·      Repeat.....

8.  Virtual printing

·      technology advances yet again. Means of production has sped       up.

·      Images, type, composition,  are created on computers

·      Files generated

·      Send button pushed

·      Virtual images distributed electronically

·      Repeat.....

Also as technology advances the means of production increases

Value decreases. Which gives rise to the need to re orient methods of creating and making

As this need arises there is a basic shift which says things don’t need to be made the idea is of significance  

Value is then assigned to the idea and the marketing or distribution of that idea. 

Another split occurs when personality becomes more important than the idea or the object.
